How to Use Subligreen Turf Colorant in the Autumn
TIMING OF THE FIRST APPLICATION
Golf courses using Subligreen Turf Colorant have the option of applying the turf colorant while the turf is still green or waiting until the turf goes dormant.
In the case of applying Subligreen Turf Colorant while the turf is still green, it is best to schedule the first turf colorant application for sometime between one and two weeks before the first frost. The advantages of applying Subligreen Turf Colorant while the turf is green include the need for less of the turf colorant during the initial application and the fact that golfers will notice no significant change in turf color from fall to winter.
Applying Subligreen Turf Colorant after the turf becomes completely dormant is also an option. Once turf has become completely dormant in the late autumn or early winter, Subligreen Turf Colorant can be applied to restore a vivid green to your course’s turf. Another advantage of waiting until the turf is dormant before applying the product is that it reduces the number of applications that will be needed during the cooler seasons.
PREPARING TO APPLY SUBLIGREEN TURF COLORANT
In the 30 to 45 days before the first frost, increase the fairway height of cut by 25% to 50% in order to increase the surface area that will be colored. This will also enhance the turf’s wear tolerance throughout the winter season.
Before applying Subligreen Turf Colorant, make sure that the turf is free of leaves, clippings and other debris. In addition, mowing and blowing debris from the fairways must be done immediately before the application of the turf colorant in order to maximize the contact of the colorant to the turf surface.
Dew should also be removed prior to the application, but light irrigation prior to the application of the turf colorant improves the incorporation of the colorant on the leaf tissue.
Sprayer: Traditional sprayers (both self-contained and mounted boom sprayers) can be used to apply Subligreen Turf Colorant.
Seals: Oil seals (such as those available from NAPA) work very well for turf colorant with centrifugal sprayers.
Nozzles: Spray nozzles are essential for the application of Subligreen Turf Colorant as they break the colorant into properly sized droplets, meter its volume and distribute it evenly over the turf. Nozzle screens can be removed when applying the turf colorant.
Subligreen Turf Colorant is a concentrate, so mixing is required. Mixing can be done in a pre-mixing drum or in a large prefabricated premixing tank with an agitator.
